French Roulette Wheel Layout

The wheel has a layout which is just like the European Roulette. It has 37 divisions including the number pockets 1 to 36, and a single ‘0’. The numbers 1 to 36 are alternately colored in black and red while ‘0’ is colored green. All these numbers are not displayed consecutively but randomly.

In addition, each pair of even numbers on the wheel is followed by a pair of odd numbers. Only a few numbers located close to the ‘0’ pocket do not follow this rule.

French Roulette Rules

You start French Roulette by betting on which pocket you think the ball will land after the spin. Once your bet is placed, you can proceed to click the “Spin” button if you are playing the virtual game. For Live French Roulette, the dealer spins the wheel after the bets have been placed.

The wheel will spin in a different direction to the thrown ball. At the end of the spin, the ball lands on a pocket. If it lands on the pocket or group on which you placed your bet, you win that round. You can then decide to keep playing the game or cash out. If you win, the payout is made according to the paytable.

Another feature that makes French Roulette more interesting is that you have 50/50 chance of winnings. This happens when you make even-money bets such as High/Low, Red/Black, and Even/Odd. It is unlike the American and European versions when you lose your even-money bet if the ball lands on ‘0’.

The reason why you don’t lose your money when the ball lands on “0” during even-money bets is because of two rules: “En Prison” and “Le Partage”. These rules bring down the house edge to 1.35%.

  • En Prison: If you place an even-money bet and the ball lands on “0” you have two opinions. Either you get 50% of your money back or the money is used in the next spin. If you choose to use your money in the next spin and the ball lands on “0” again you lose your entire bet. If you win the next, your money is fully refunded to you (without any earnings).
  • Le Partage: If you place an even-money bet and the ball lands on “0” the money is dividend by two. You keep 50% and the house keeps 50% of you even-money bet. With this rule you don’t have a chance to bet your money again.

Usually, both rules are not applied at the same time. Casinos choose to apply one of the rules and most often they apply Le Partage.
